This video show titled, �Elon Magazine� was produced by the students and faculty of Elon College and was recorded in 1986 in the Black Box Theatre. �The Elon Magazine� was hosted by Bob Anderson, Director of College Planning at Elon College. Anderson explained that �Elon Magazine� show was once called �Elon in Review.� The �Elon Magazine� show was featuring the students, faulty, and staff along with college events. In this particular video, �The Elon Magazine� show featured the opening of Elon College. There are 3,093 students enrolled at Elon College (the largest class at Elon College). A natural piece was produced and played of students arriving at Elon College with music. Faculty members walked into Alumni Gym for New Student Convocation. J. Earl Danieley, Jo Watts Williams, George Troxler, Nancy Harris, and John Sullivan walked in the faculty line. Warren Board, Vice President for Academic and Student Affairs spoke to the freshmen class. Board�s comments included: talked about being teachers; discussed what the students will learn by getting to know other students; Elon College is a residential college; students� education will differ because of humane learning; (shot at J. Fred Young and Richard McBride listening); and wished the class well. J. Fred Young, President of Elon College spoke to the new students. Young�s comments included: stated it was good to see and have the new freshmen class at Elon College; informed the Class of 1990 that the students will learn; attend concerts, football games, pizza parties, dances, and lectures; become friends with faculty; and informed parents that they may be one of 100 individuals who may be sitting next to future in-laws; the reality of today (in 1986) at Elon College was the student left home; there was shift in the student�s and parent�s lives today (1986) in responsibilities; the responsibility of your education shifts to you as the student; receiving an education from a four-year college was the best decision; and if you as a student leave Elon College as a better person because you have been educated at Elon College. Scott Ward, Student Government President Elon College spoke at the New Student Convocation. Ward�s comments included: reflected on his first two weeks at college; stated he met more people in the first two weeks of college than he would in the rest of his life; shot of Gerald (Gerry) Francis sitting on the platform; walked into a classroom, we are all �A� students until the student proves otherwise; college is a time to test yourself � but do not cheat yourself; quoted from the �Man in the Glass� the author is unknown; advice to parents � when you depart Elon, please leave three things for your child � love, encouragement, and a very strong pair of wings; and Ward stated he was honored to serve as the Elon College Student Body President for each new student. Anderson returned to hosting the show with stating the arrival of new students was a three-day process with the largest class arriving in 1986. The program highlighted the arrival picnic, registration for classes in alumni gym; and playing & singing the Elon College alma mater. Anderson reminded the audience if they were interested in attending the cultural events � the person needed to write to the Office of Culture Affairs, Dr. George Troxler, who will send an individual a calendar at no-cost. The faculty advisor for �Elon Magazine� was Raymond (Ray) Johnson. |
